Alas for the ten-day span of Muharram, for it is
Alas the tenth of Muharram has come
a ten-day span in which all but weeping is forbidden.
A month in which nothing but weeping is allowed
قتلwas slain الحسينHusayn ابنson of الرسولthe Messenger محمدMuhammad
قتل الحسين ابن الرسول محمد
فيهin it وذاقand he tasted الذلhumiliation وهوwhile he was مكرمhonored
فيه وذاق الذل وهو مكرم
Husayn, son of the Messenger Muhammad, was slain
Hussein son of the Messenger Muhammad was killed
therein, and tasted humiliation, though he was honored.
In it and tasted humiliation though he was dignified
