Who is it that entices you, O gazelle of the ghada trees,

so that you have left the heart in the embers of ghada wood?

And who conceals from you the virtues

of my sincere affection, whose renown has filled all space?

You exposed me to sundering, without cause,

O you who approach one day and turn away the next.

Either my anguish has incited you against me,

or my enviers, in malice; so you flared up, provoked.

You grew angry—nay, you angered every noble spirit

that knew my character; so follow the path of contentment.

Remind yourself of my virtues, if you are alone,

without obstinacy, and weep for a time gone by.

Do you think, O gazelle of the ghada trees, that what you have committed

has passed, as you claimed, and that judgment will overlook you?

God is just, and truth has not

left its place; so let whoever judges judge falsely.

The sun of truth dispels the darkness; it has not

been taken for lightning that flashed deceitfully.

Calm yourself, for every beginning has an end,

whether its night-traveler is sincere or has ulterior motives.

And take heed: this world is an illusion; it holds no

span, however long its cords stretch, that does not end.
