بالخلفwith a broken promise قابلنيhe met me وظلماًand unjustly جاراhe wronged
The beloved promised a visit, then played coy;
The beloved promised a visit and played coy.
He met me with a broken promise—why did he wrong me?
He met me with a broken promise and unjustly wronged me.
فأتيتهso I came to him بتذللwith submissiveness وتواضعand humility
فعلاًthen he rose بأجنحةon wings الغرورof conceit وطاراand flew
So I came to him in meekness and humility;
So I came to him with submissiveness and humility.
But he soared on the wings of vanity and flew away.
Then he rose on the wings of conceit and flew away.

Death is easier to bear than the coyness of a young gazelle
Death is easier than the coyness of a young gazelle
Who bound the heart and scattered the thoughts.
Who bound my heart and scattered my thoughts.
