يلويكturns you away عنfrom حبlove of الحبيبthe beloved الاولthe first
O heart, do not accept the words of an adviser
O heart, do not accept an adviser's counsel
who would turn you from love of the first Beloved.
who turns you from love for the first beloved.
واصدقand be true لمنto the one whom تهواهyou love فيin تركforsaking السوىall else
واقبلand turn عليهtoward him بحليةwith the adornment of المتذللone who humbles himself
Be true to the one you love by forsaking all else,
And be true to the one you love by forsaking all else,
and approach him wearing the ornament of humble submission.
and turn toward him adorned with humility.
واحملand assume لهfor him طورthe manner of التذللhumility انif علاhe grows lofty
متعززاًholding himself proud بتفخمwith grand airs وتدللand coyness
Keep toward him the posture of submission should he rise—
And assume a humble manner for his sake if he grows lofty,
proudly aloof in grandeur and coyness.
proud in his pomp and coyness.
انindeed الجمالbeauty لمسكرsurely intoxicates اصحابهits possessors
سكرthe intoxication of الدلالcoyness وليسand does not يعرفknow ذاthis الخليone untouched by love
Beauty surely intoxicates its companions:
Indeed, beauty surely intoxicates its possessors
the intoxication of coyness, which the heart untouched by love cannot know.
with the intoxication of coyness; one untouched by love does not know this.
فاذاso when الحبيبthe beloved ثناهsways him خمرthe wine of دلالهhis coyness
وجفاكand he spurns you بغياunjustly فاصطبرthen be patient وتحملand endure
So when the wine of his coyness turns the beloved away,
So when the wine of his coyness sways the beloved,
and he shuns you capriciously, be steadfast and endure.
and he spurns you unjustly, then be patient and endure.

O heart, do not despair: in the creed of love,
O heart, do not despair, for in the faith of love
the lover’s patience safeguards what is yet to come.
the lover's patience safeguards the future.
والهفتاهoh, my longing! علىfor زمانa time قدalready مضىpassed

كناwe were عنfrom البعدseparation المريعdreadful بمعزلfar removed
Ah, my sorrow for a time now gone,
Oh, my longing for a time gone by,
when we were spared the terror of distance.
when we were far removed from dreadful separation.

Today, O my heart, you know that I
And today, O my heart, you know that I
am in one dwelling, and my little gazelle in another.
am in one dwelling, and my little gazelle in another.

مهماhowever دجاgrows dark ليلthe night of المهمةhardship ينجليit clears
In either state, I am a longing lover who endures;
Indeed, in either state I am lovesick and patient;
however dark the night of the desert waste, it will clear.
however dark the night of hardship grows, it will clear.
