ياO ساكنdweller in القلبthe heart لقدindeed
يا ساكن القلب لقد
ابكيتyou made weep عينيmy eye بالنوىthrough separation
ابكيت عيني بالنوى
O dweller in the heart, you have indeed
O dweller of my heart, my eyes
made my eye weep through separation.
Have wept with yearning
ماnot غبتyou were absent عنهfrom it لحظةىa moment
ما غبت عنه لحظةى
وهكذاand thus دينcreed الهوىlove
وهكذا دين الهوى
Not for a moment were you absent from it,
I have not been absent from him a moment
and such is the creed of love.
Such is the religion of love
قدindeed حرمhas forbidden القلبthe heart بانthat
قد حرم القلب بان
يمسshould touch سرهits secret السوىanything other
يمس سره السوى
The heart has forbidden
The heart is forbidden
anything other to touch its secret,
To be touched by anyone else
ولوand even if هواكlove for you كلهall of it
ولو هواك كله
بجمرةwith the ember of الوجدyearning كوىseared
بجمرة الوجد كوى
even if love for you seared it wholly
Even if your love burns it completely
with the ember of yearning.
With the embers of passion
ذوىwithered الوجودexistence ولمعand for the mean- (continued)
ذوى الوجود ولمع
ناك-ing of you (completes 'your meaning') عنfrom الكلall انزوىwithdrew
ناك عن الكل انزوى
Existence withered, and for your meaning
The essence of existence and its brilliance
it withdrew from all.
Withdraws from everything else for you
وقدand indeed طوىenfolded لكfor you الهوىlove
وقد طوى لك الهوى
قلباa heart ونعمand how excellent ماwhat طوىit enfolded
قلبا ونعم ما طوى
And love has enfolded for you
And love has folded for you
a heart—how excellent what it enfolded!
A heart, and what a good folding!
يشرفgrows noble قلبهhis heart سرهhis secret
يشرف قلبه سره
علىupon غرامكpassion for you انطوىis enfolded
على غرامك انطوى
His heart grows noble; his secret
His heart prides itself
is enfolded in passion for you.
On being infatuated with you
متىwhenever حوىencompasses مضمونهits content
متى حوى مضمونه
علىupon الكمالاتthe perfections احتوىencompasses
على الكمالات احتوى
Whenever it encompasses its content,
Whenever its contents are folded
it encompasses all perfections.
Into perfection, it contains
آهah علىfor وقتa time مضىgone by
آه على وقت مضى
معwith الحبيبthe beloved فيin اللواal-Liwā
مع الحبيب في اللوا
Ah, for a time gone by
Oh, the time that has passed
with the beloved at al-Liwā.
With the beloved in seclusion
اخلصتI made sincere فيهin it نيتيmy intention
اخلصت فيه نيتي
وللمحبand for the lover ماwhat نوىhe intended
وللمحب ما نوى
I made my intention sincere then,
In it I purified my intention
and the lover has what he intended.
And intended for the lover what he intended
