as his draught and found distance and abandonment sweet.

It found solace and sweetness in distance and estrangement

سلام محب لا يزال على الوفا

وان جاء امرا في تهجمه امرا

وان جاء امرا في تهجمه امرا

Peace from a lover who remains faithful,

Greetings to a lover who remains faithful

even if he commits a grievous deed in his rash assault.

Even if one day it seems he is wavering

قبلت له عذر التجافي تأولا

قبلت له عذر التجافي تأولا

ومن شرفت اعراقه يقبل العذرا

ومن شرفت اعراقه يقبل العذرا

I accepted his excuse for estrangement, interpreting it charitably;

I accepted his excuse for aloofness as an interpretation

and whoever is of noble lineage accepts an excuse.

And he whose veins are noble accepts excuses
