Love's wine ran riot amid thoughts.

How much solace for the soul and wine there is in love!

And separation shook the minds of men.

And how many a steadfast man cried out at separation, O friend!

O driver of the pale camels, seeking the sanctuary,

    Yearning for those radiant faces,

He endures hunger and thirst for their sake,

Through toil, he joins his night to morning.

By God, if you reach their encampments,

Then mention my tears and the firm pledges.

For I love those among them who live,

And those among them who have gone to God and departed.

A people who have, in my heart's core and breast,

Whether near or far, spacious dwellings.

Whenever they pervaded my mind, it grew drunk,

And tears from my eye flowed like a torrent.

Nor did my eye behold the sun of glory

Without their countenance shining before it.

Indeed, love—alas!—is the bringer of affliction.

So remain safe, my brother, so long as you have not loved the fair.
