العارف المحض لا يخلو بسيرته
وحالهand his state طرفةan instant منof حكمةwisdom الأدبproper conduct
وحاله طرفة من حكمة الأدب
The genuine gnostic is never, in his conduct
The knower of pure truth walks blameless in his life
Or his state, even for an instant, without the wisdom of proper conduct.
His state an instance of wisdom's moral way
فإنfor if تفاخرhe boasts كانis الفخرpride عنfrom أدبproper conduct
فإن تفاخر كان الفخر عن أدب
وإنand if تذللhe humbles himself كانis الذلhumility عنfor سببa reason
وإن تذلل كان الذل عن سبب
For if he boasts, his pride springs from proper conduct;
If he should boast, his boast shows courtesy
And if he humbles himself, his humility is for a reason.
If he should stoop, his stoop obeys destiny's sway
