متى خيام من احب تقرب

ويشتفى قلب بها معذب
When will the tents of the one I love draw near,
When will the tents of Khiyam visit me,
And a tormented heart find healing in them?
And my pained heart will find relief,

وينطوي بساط بعد طالما

اج بقلبي منه نار نلهب
And the carpet of separation be rolled up? For so long,
And the carpet will be folded after it had been spread out for so long,
From it, a fire we kindle has blazed within my heart.
Bringing fire that burned my heart?

And union swiftly erases separation,
And separation will quickly erase with reunion,
And indeed the hours of union grow sweet.
Even though the times of reunion cause torment.

To God I complain of blazing anguish,
I complain to God of the agony of sadness,
And a tear pouring from me like a torrent.
And the tears that pour from me like a flood.

I spend my nights wandering, confused by love,
And the horses of the one I love play in my heart.
With thoughts of whom I adore playing in my heart.

You grow distant, you draw gently nearer to my soul?
You distance yourself from my soul, you return with kindness?

سهلا تأمل فهو امر يصعب
O you who have deemed estrangement, in love's creed,
O you who have seen estrangement in the creed of passion -
Easy—reflect, for it is a difficult matter.
Consider it easy, for it is a difficult matter.

O you who find ease in shunning, perhaps
O you who find comfort in aloofness, perhaps
The one at ease grows weary from what he has done.
What comforts the aloof brings fatigue.

وما انا لا وهواك مذنب
You charged me with guilt; your aim is estrangement.
You blamed me for the sin while your intention was cruelty,
And I am not—no, by your love—guilty.
Yet I am no sinner, save for my love of you.

You disbelieved my claim and believed others,
You called my claim a lie and believed the untruth,
And sometimes the one branded a liar is believed.
And sometimes the liar is believed.

Be wherever you wish and distance yourself, but
Your hem is dragged through the wilderness of my heart.
Your tail still drags in the midst of my heart.

You broke the covenant of love unjustly, so expect
Its recompense, for my Lord's mystery inspires dread.
Its recompense, for my Lord's decree is feared.

Many a night the traitor has passed in safety,
How many nights has betrayal safely slept
And a terrifying dawn's mantle split away from him.
Only to be ripped apart by the cloak of a frightening dawn?

Your breaths that passed with treachery
Your breaths which left with betrayal
Are written against you on the hidden tablet.
Are recorded against you in the hidden tablet.

They are numbered and He calculates them all
By them all is reckoned as a judgment against you.
To judge you accordingly.

None upholds sincerity, loyalty, and gentleness
And affection except the good-hearted and refined.
Except the kind and refined.

How often have we tested you before, O deceiver!
How often we have tested you, O deceiver!
And it is futile to test one already tested.
Yet the tested continues to test in vain.

Yes, noble deeds are a trait of ours,
Indeed, we have the traits of generosity
That speaks of stock whose roots are pure.
From the pure, flowing veins.

You who turned away are to us
You are to us the mighty, cherished one.
A beloved, gentle hand.

We still extended our shade over you.

From God—yes, by the majesty of His holiness—
What glory and holiness of God, not even
Not an atom's weight is ever hidden.
An atom's weight, escapes Him.

You scratched your skin in self-exaltation; likewise,
You scratched your skin arrogantly, just as
The sick, scab-ridden man scratches his skin.
The sickly mangy camel scratches its skin.

For God, by God, our days have passed,
By God, our days have passed
And the curtains of piety are drawn over them.
As the cover of piety is struck over them.

You distorted our rightful claim and went wading into reckless talk,
You twisted our rights and went on deluded,
And rage on behalf of base deeds and pretensions.
Angry at the world and arrogant leaders.

Your religion is betrayal, ours is loyalty -
Every people has a path, O beloved.
Each people has a way, O beloved.
