إِذا غابَ الوجودُ وغِبْت عنْه

إِذا غابَ الوجودُ وغِبْت عنْه

فلم تعْلم أبْعد أم تَداني

فلم تعْلم أبْعد أم تَداني

When existence vanished and you vanished from it,

When existence vanished and I was absent from it

you did not know whether far away or near,

Not knowing whether I was far or near

وكُنْت من الزَّمان بلا زَمانٍ

وكُنْت من الزَّمان بلا زَمانٍ

وكُنت من المكانِ بلا مكانِ

وكُنت من المكانِ بلا مكانِ

and, as for time, you were without time,

And I was, for time, without time

and, as for place, you were without place,

And I was, for space, without space

وحُلْتَ فلسْتَ أنت على يقين

وحُلْتَ فلسْتَ أنت على يقين

عَياناً ثم غبْت عن العَيان

عَياناً ثم غبْت عن العَيان

and you changed, so you were not certain

And you were released, you were not certain

through direct vision; then you vanished from sight,

Clearly visible, then absent from sight

وقلْت فنيت أنَّ الحالَ باقِ

وقلْت فنيت أنَّ الحالَ باقِ

وقلْتَ بقيتُ إِنَّ الحالَ فان

وقلْتَ بقيتُ إِنَّ الحالَ فان

and you said, 'I have ceased to be; the state endures,'

And you said, I perished, that the state is lasting

and you said, 'I remain; the state passes away,'

And you said, I remained, that the state is fleeting

رأيْتَ الحق فيك وأنت فيه

رأيْتَ الحق فيك وأنت فيه

فصَار العبدُ حُراً في أمان

فصَار العبدُ حُراً في أمان

you saw the Real within you, and you within Him,

You saw the Truth in you and you in Him

and so the servant became free and secure.
