    We drank wine without vessels.

So do not suppose its spring is scalding.

Ah, how sweet our drunkenness when it revealed

The drinking companions' secret and what was there.

We heard through it the melodies of old.

    Be renewed by an aged wine;

My mind turned to nothing but it.

Through it the jinn and the binn ran riot.

And their cupbearer is present—they behold him.

And its angels prostrated before the wine-jar.

Thus their concern became my own.

He says, 'I have forsaken it—what is it to me?'

And Idris was its drinking companion on high.

Through it Noah lamented and summoned to

Its monastery's sanctuary his afflicted son.

Then he said to him, 'Board the sailing ship,

To drink from its flowing spring.'

And when the Friend became a jewel through it,

He said, 'Leave me, for I am ill.

    I offer my son, and that is little;

And by father and mother, with his two maternal uncles,

Leave off mixing it, and drink it pure.'

And from its light came the light of God's interlocutor.

And through it Jesus came to heal the sick.

And its unmixed draught has been the Chosen One's from of old.

So what can I say, when my words

Fall short? Silence is stronger in reaching him.
