سافِرْtravel ولاand do not تَجْزَعْlose heart
واسْكُنand find rest إِليْin me
Travel, and do not lose heart;
Travel and do not despair,
and find rest in me.
Settle down and
ومُتْand die وعِشْand live واسْمَعْand listen
كَيْso that تَبْقَىyou remain حَيْalive
And die, and live, and listen,
Die and live and listen
so that you remain alive.
So you may remain alive,
ياO سائِلاًone asking مِنِّيof me
كَيْفَhow الوصولْarrival
O you who ask me
O you who ask me
how to arrive:
How to arrive,
إِنْif كانْit is تُصَدِّقْنيyou believe me
فيماin what نَقُولI say
if you believe me
If you believe me
in what I say,
In what we say,
أدْنُواdraw near وخُذْand take مِنِّيfrom me
بَعْضَsome of الأصُولthe fundamentals
draw near and take from me
Come near and take from me
some of the fundamentals.
Some principles,
يَكُونْwill be سَبَبthe cause of سَعْدَكْyour happiness
جَمْعَكْyour collected attention عَلَيْupon me
The cause of your happiness will be
It will be the cause of your happiness
your concentration on me.
To gather yourself upon me,
وبَعْدand after ذَاthis نُعْطيكI will give you
شُرْبa draught الدُّوَيْthe remedy
And after this I will give you
And after that we will give you
a draught of the remedy.
A drink of medicine,

Look into your mirror:
Look in your mirror
you will see a marvel.
And you will see wonder,
وَنزِّهand purify أوْقاتَكyour hours
وانْفِand banish الرِّيَبdoubts
And purify your hours,
And sanctify your times
and banish doubts.
And turn away doubt,
فالكُلُّfor all مِنfrom ذاتَكْyour own being
لاdo not تَنحَجَبbe veiled
For all comes from your own being;
For all is from your essence
do not be veiled.
Do not conceal yourself,
وعِنْدَماand when يَصْفُوit grows serene
عَيْشَكْyour life شُوَيْa little
And when it grows serene—
And when your life
your life, a little—
Becomes clear,

نَشْراًunfolding وطيْand folding
you see existence appear,
You will see existence
unfolding and folding.
Blossoming and extending,
قُلtell للعذولْto the reproacher يَكْفيهit suffices him
ماwhat حَلَّbefell بِيهْupon him
Tell the reproacher: enough for him is
Tell the reluctant one it is enough for him
what has befallen him.
What has befallen me,
لَوْif يَسْمَعhe hears التنبيهthe admonition
مِنُّواfrom himself وفِيهْand within himself
If he heard the admonition
If he would hear the warning
from himself and within himself,
From us and in it,
كانْhe would يَنْتَبِهْtake heed
لكنbut وقعhe fell فيinto التَّيهْbewilderment
he would take heed.
He would wake up,
But he has fallen into bewilderment,
But he fell into confusion

swimming in the sea of error,
Wandering in the sea of error,
not knowing which way.
Not knowing where,

Such is the one who sets sail
Just like the one who embarks
with desire.
With fancy,
أيْنَwhere الذيthe one who يفنىis annihilated

Where is the one who is annihilated
Where is the one who perishes
in our love,
In our love,
ويَفْهَمُand understands المعنىthe meaning
مِنْfrom حَيّنَاour quarter
and understands the meaning
And understands the meaning
from our quarter?
From our existence?

Let him tell whoever sings
Say to the one who sang
to chant for us:
Reciting for us,
I walk
أجَلُّthe noblest شَيْthing
Naked, I wish to walk—
Naked we want to walk
the noblest thing—
It is the best thing,
كَمَاjust as مَشَىwalked قَبْلِيbefore me

As walked before me
Ghaylan of Mayy.
The naked bards.
