زَارنيvisited me منthe one whom أُحبI love قبلbefore الصباحِdawn
فَحَلاليso, lawful for me تهَتُّكيmy shameless abandon وافتِضاحِيand my disgrace
The one I love visited me before dawn.
The one I love visited me before dawn
So my abandon and my disgrace are lawful for me.
So my inhibitions faded and shame left me
وسقانيand he gave me drink وقالand he said نمsleep وتسلَّىand take comfort
ماthere is no عَلىupon مَنwhoever أحَبَّناloves us منany جُناحِblame
And he gave me drink and said, “Sleep and take comfort.”
He gave me drink and said sleep and relax
No blame rests on whoever loves us.
No fault lies with those whom we love
فَأدِرso pass around كأسcup منthe one whom أُحِبُّI love وأهْوىand I desire
فَهوىfor love of منthe one whom أُحِبُّI love عَينthe very essence of صَلاحِrighteousness
So pass around the cup of the one I love and desire.
Pass the cup of the one I love and desire
For love of the one I love is righteousness itself.
For the one I love and desire is virtuous
لوْif سَقاهَاhe gave it to drink لميِّتto a dead person عادwould return حَيًّاalive
فَهيfor it is راحىmy wine وَاحةan oasis الأرْواحِthe souls
If he gave it to a dead man to drink, that man would live again.
If given to one dead, he would return living
For it is my wine, an oasis for souls.
It is solace and comfort for souls
لاdo not تَلمنيblame me فَلستfor I do not أصْغىlisten لِعذلٍto reproach
لاَno ولوand even if قُطِّعwere torn apart الحشاthe heart بالصياَحby shouting
Do not blame me, for I do not listen to reproach.
Reproach me not, for I heed no blame
No—even if my heart were torn apart by shouting.
No, even if the meadows cry loudly
مَاhow أُحيلىvery sweet حَديثtalk ذِكرremembrance of حَبيبيmy beloved
بَينamong أهْلpeople of الصفَاpurity وَأهلand people of الفلاحfelicity
How very sweet is talk that recalls my beloved,
How wonderful to speak of my beloved
Among the people of purity and the people of felicity.
Amongst people of purity and people of joy
قدindeed تجلىrevealed himself الحبِيبthe beloved فيin جنحdarkness of لَيْلِىmy night
وَحَبانِيand he favored me بوصلهwith union with him للصَّبَاحuntil dawn
The beloved has revealed himself in the darkness of my night,
My beloved appeared in the wings of my night
And granted me union with him until dawn.
And gifted me his company until morn
طابَgrew sweet وَقتيmy time وقدand already خلعتI cast off عذَارِيmy bridle
فَاسقِنيso give me drink بالكؤوسِwith the cups والأقداحِand the goblets
My time has grown sweet, and I have cast off my bridle.
My time is blessed, my restraints cast off
So give me drink from cups and goblets.
Give me cups and goblets
