خلُّوه يفَنىّ عُمرَه بفُنونِهْ
The enthralled lover is content with his madness in love.
Al-Mutayyam is pleased with his madness in love
Leave him to spend his life in its many forms.
Leave him to perish his life in his arts

Do not reproach him, for your reproach does no good.
Do not blame him, your blame will not benefit
Forgetfulness of love is no part of his creed.
Abandoning love is not part of his faith

By the one whose agate was mentioned
the lover's oath, by his love and his solemn pledge.
The lover swore by his love and oath

I have none but you, save that I repent
I have none but you, though I repent
of love's waning spells or its changing hues.
Of the indifferent in love or its change
ماليwhy is it that I إِذاwhen هتفcalled الحمامُthe dove بأيْكةٍin a thicket

أبداً أحِنُّ لشَجْوِه وشُجونهْ
Why, when the dove calls in a thicket,
Whenever the doves coo with passion
do I always yearn for its lament and its sorrows?
I am forever moved by their plaints and sorrows

And when tears flow without weeping
the lovelorn one's tears stream from his eyes.
And patience flows tears from the eyes
