    O reproacher, be gentle

    with the one who has melted in passionate love.

    بَلْ يَزِيدُ الصَّبَّ شَوْقَا

    Reproach does not turn a lovesick lover back;

    rather, it increases the lover's longing.

    فاتئّد لأنْ لا تَشْقَى

    Indeed, there is deafness in his ears;

    so go gently, lest you suffer.

    Our love for a thing blinds

    and deafens—I have spoken truly.

    Whenever you say, 'Settle in the west,'

    then my heart settles in the east.

    فِيه اللّبيبُ يَرْقَى

    Do not regard love as a descent;

    within it, the wise one ascends.

    How often, O my little heart, you echo

    al-Ghawr's little lightning-flash with your throbbing!

    All that is in love is sweet—

    whatever torment one encounters within it.

    فافْنَ إنَّ رِدْتَ تَبْقَى

    For annihilation in it is life;

    so be annihilated, if you wish to endure.
