1. يا أهيلَ الحِمى لقدْ

    زادَ شوقي إِليكمْ

    O dear folk of the sanctuary, indeed,

    my longing for you has grown.

  2. قلتموا الحب ينجحدْ

    أنا ما طِقْتُ ينكتمْ

    You said love could be denied;

    I could not keep it hidden.

  3. فارقتْ رُوحي الجسدْ

    عَذبُوا ما عليكمْ

    My soul has left the body;

    torment me—no blame falls on you.

  4. كُلَّما تفعلوا معي

    من صدود ومن نَفرْ

    Whenever you treat me

    with rejection and aversion,

  5. زادَ فيكمْ تولعي

    ما يفدني سوى الصبرْ

    my passion for you grows;

    nothing helps me but patience.

  6. بُعْدُكُم زادني اشتياقْ

    وجَفَاكم ما يحتمالْ

    Your distance has heightened my longing,

    and your coldness cannot be borne.

  7. اعذروا كلَ من عَشَاقْ

    وجفاه الحبيبْ وقالْ

    Forgive everyone who has loved,

    and whose beloved shunned him, and who said:

  8. مَصْعَبْ البعد والفراقْ

    وما أحلا يوم الوصالْ

    How hard are distance and separation,

    and how sweet is the day of union!

  9. أضرم الشوقُ أضلعي

    ونصح عندما ظهرْ

    Longing set my ribs ablaze,

    and gave counsel when it appeared.

  10. زادَ فيكمْ تولعي

    ما يفدني سوى الصبرْ

    My passion for you grows;

    nothing helps me but patience.
