Not everyone who was given form

    should you reckon alive.

    Earthenware is not alike—

    fired and unfired.

[Unclear word]; and what is the unfired clay?

    As it was kneaded.

    And they shaped the earthenware

    with certainty.

    If it breaks at once,

they turn it back to clay.

    And if fired pottery breaks,

    here, a little.

    Earthenware is not alike—

    fired and unfired.

    So from firing it rises,

    as it was fired.

And the unfired one, in its clay,

    if it returns, is smeared.

And do you see fired pottery

    turn back to salty mud?

    So whoever's skull is damp

    needs cautery for himself.

    Earthenware is not alike—

    fired and unfired.

    Four are the governing principles,

    without deviation:

    بِهِ ثَوَا

    water and clay—a watery slurry—

    in which it dwelt;

    and fire, in truth,

    then air.

    رُدُّو سُوَىْ

    So these three things—

    return them alike.

    Earthenware is not alike—

    fired and unfired.

    So the pair is paradise,

    and fire stands alone.

    So understand this meaning,

    O you servants!

    And whoever enters worn out

    returns new.

    And whoever understands needs

    to be a youth.

    Earthenware is not alike—

    fired and unfired.

And most of those who remain

are then those who gathered firewood.

I tell him: here, through you,

    ruin has come.

If you were to seek what is yours,

    the quest is within you;

    the fires would turn

to a little water for him.

    Earthenware is not alike—

    fired and unfired.
