    My patience has run out,

and my guarded secret has come to light.

    It is not apparent,

    ever; his eyelids are frail.

Is there for my lovesick longing

    and its malady any cure?

    An archer shot me

with an arrow from the bow of separation.

    Leave off blaming me,

for the body's powers are failing.

    And tears flow

    in fountains from every eye,

    from a sleepless eye

that sorrows, too, have kept awake.

    I and my heart,

    amid hopes and calamities,

    الْقَلْبُ مِنْهَا يَذُوب

    are in the fire of my struggle;

the heart melts because of it.

    God is my Lord—

    what hearts endure!

    For every noble man

    says what is not easy

    for him in the end,

    then withdraws into stillness.

    By God, how much

    time has passed for us—

    a life of ease,

and our time spent in safety.

So, if it were made everlasting,

it would be a beautiful thing.

    How often I raced

the steeds of passion in varied ways,

    and Time was an ally,

    a helper, not a betrayer.

    صَبْراً لِمَا قد أتَى

    O my heart, take it slowly;

be patient with what has come.

    For patience is more fitting

if a young man's endurance fails.

    And sing a saying

already spoken, so that you may stand firm:

    Would that I knew:

    if God goes against expectations,

    would you find me patient?

What God has decreed will be.
