أنِخْmake kneel هُديتَmay you be guided الايْنُقاthe she-camels
فَقَدْfor indeed وصَلْتَyou have reached الأبْرقَاal-Abraq
Make the she-camels kneel—may you be guided.
When you came as a gift,
For you have reached al-Abraq.
You reached the lightning.
أمَاdo ... not تَرَىyou see نَارَthe fire of الْقِرىhospitality
علىon رُبَىthe hills of ذَاتِDhat (place of) النَّقَاal-Naqa (the sand dune)
Do you not see the fire of hospitality
Don't you see the fire of the villages
On the hills of Dhat al-Naqa?
On the hill of beautiful palm trees?
كأنهاas though it were نجمٌa star بَدَاappeared
بَلْrather بَدْرُa full moon تمِّfullness أشْرَقَاshone forth
As though it were a star come into view—
As if it were a star that appeared,
Rather, a full moon shining forth.
Rather a full moon that shone.
والحَيُّand the encampment عَنْto يمنىthe right of الرُّبَىthe hills
يَاO سَعْدُSa'd أبْشرْrejoice باللّقَاat the meeting
And the encampment is to the right of the hills;
And the living one, to the right of the hill,
O Sa'd, rejoice at the meeting!
O joy, rejoice at the meeting.
فَقَدْfor indeed ذَوىhas withered عودthe stem of النَّوىseparation
وغُصْنُand the branch of وصْلىmy union أوْرَقَاhas put forth leaves
For separation's stem has withered,
The sapling's firewood has melted away,
And the branch of my union has put forth leaves.
And the branch of my connection has blossomed.
نِلْتI attained السَّرورَjoy بالْعَنَاthrough toil
لاno رَاحَةَrest دُونَwithout الشَّقَاsuffering
I attained joy through toil;
I obtained happiness with fatigue,
There is no rest without suffering.
No rest without hardship.
فاشْرَبْso drink واطْربْand be merry لاdo not تكُنْbe
مِمَّنْamong those who سَهَاwas heedless عمّنْof the one who سَقَىgave drink
So drink and be merry; do not be
So drink and be cheerful, don't be
Among those who forget the one who gave them drink.
One of those who forgot who gave him drink.
وانْهَبْand seize زَمانَthe time of الْعَيْشliving مَاnot

عُمرُthe life of الْفَتَىthe young man إلاَّexcept البَقَاabiding
And seize the time of living; there is nothing
Seize the time of life while
To a young man's life but abiding.
The youth's life is but fleeting.
