    Indeed, it has clothed me in a robe of sickness and abasement—

    Love of a graceful maiden, proud of her beauty.

    She robbed me of myself and made me absent from myself,

    And reason grew bewildered through love of her.

    She shed my blood in love, then said:

    O interloper, you fell in love with me—you are a fool.

    لا يَنالُ الوصَالْ من فيه فَضْلهْ

    If you desire union with us, then your death is a condition;

    No one retaining a remnant of self attains union.

    Cleanse the eye with tears poured forth,

    Of beholding all else; every ailment will vanish.

    لا تَكُنْ غيرُ وجْهنَا لك قبْله

    And cast off your self, O unrestrained lover of me;

    Let nothing but our face be your direction of prayer.

    And offer your soul—for our sake it is but little—

    Contentedly; do not say, 'Who made my blood lawful to shed?'

    Be the dot of the letter bāʾ if you wish to rise,

    Or leave off speaking of nearness to us, O love-bewildered one.

    And desire us for our own sake, with no ulterior aim,

    And remain at the door in modesty and bashfulness.

    تلك عاداتُنا لِمَن شَاء قبْلَهْ

    Whoever comes to our door, we grant him grace;

    Such are our ways with whoever wishes for a kiss.

    And make poverty your intercessor; you will be enriched.

    How excellent is neediness as a religion and a creed!

    How many a lover has shone forth through his helplessness,

    And gained from us what he seeks, and the like of it!

    This is the way of lovers, so tread it,

    And leave the ignorant reproacher and his reproach.
