    Had I not known

    that whoever is annihilated abides,

I would not have vanished from myself.

Indeed, my death is my life,

    and my annihilation is abiding.

And through the effacement of my attributes,

the meeting became sweet to me.

And I gathered myself within my essence,

    and grew familiar with piety,

    after I had gone astray.

    سَلَّمَ اللهُ سَلِمْت

    The decrees of fate helped me;

God preserved me; I was safe.

    By God, understand my question,

    and awaken, O beloved,

and rise to keep vigil through the nights.

The dawn of your union is near.

And give ear, and hear my words,

    and return soon.

If it becomes clear to you, you will know.

And I am your adviser, O my son:

    whenever you die, you live.

    You, if you understand,

watch over the secret within you,

and leave the self behind; you will be safe

from an enemy who afflicts you.

And seek knowledge; you will learn.

Through it we deny any partner.

    You abide after you have learned;

you tend the secret of meanings.

What God wills, you also will.

    O you of subtle meanings,

you plunged into the sea of knowledge,

    and left the vessels

    below, below the boundaries.

    They do not see nearness

except as they do the stars.

    Thus, had you been left—

    you, with your self's portion—

you would not have been singled out for guidance.

As for me, since my watcher disappeared,

    suffering has left me,

    and my beloved revealed himself,

    and I attained my desires.

And my physician gave me to drink

    from the drink of bliss.

    But indeed I became intoxicated,

    عن وُجُودي خرجْت

    and I truly entered ecstasy;

I went beyond my own existence.
