لاَ تَلْتفِتْ باللهِ يا ناظري

لاهيف كالغصنِ النّاضرِ
Do not turn, by God, O my eye,
O my observer, do not turn in God's name
Toward a slender-waisted one, like a verdant bough.
Towards one swaying like a blossoming branch

What are the herd and the moringa trees, and what is Laʿlaʿ?
What is the flock, the cup, what is fantasy?
What is al-Khayf, what is the gazelle of Banū ʿĀmir?
What is fear, what are the sons of Aamer?

وخَلّ عن سرب حمى حاجرِ
O heart, cast off the illusion of the sandhill,
O heart, turn away your cares of people
And leave the herd in Ḥājir's protected pasture behind.
And leave the protected flock of Hajar

The beauty of the one you named is perishable.
The beauty of one you called fleeting
What need has the wise person of the perishable?
What need has the wise man for the fleeting?

Rather, his quest is only for the One
Rather his quest is for the one
Whose dazzling beauty has enraptured all creation.
Who has enthralled all creation with his dazzling beauty

So the disheveled, the dust-covered, and such as I—
As for disheveled hair and dust, and one like me
I perish for the sake of the First, the Last.
I will perish for the sake of the First, the Last

He bestowed radiance upon the sun, just as
The sun has lent its brilliance
He lent it to the shining moon.
Just as it lent its light to the resplendent moon

لله دَرُّ المغْرم الحْائرِ
I have become enamored of Him, bewildered.
I have become enamored and confused by him
How wondrous, by God, is the bewildered lover!
God reward the enamored confused one
