My beloved—I have never

I am a beloved cat

been without him.

Never consoled from him

كيْفَ أسْلُوا عن حِبِّي

كيْفَ أسْلُوا عن حِبِّي

إِنَّ ذَا عجيب

إِنَّ ذَا عجيب

How can I forget my beloved?

How can I be consoled of my love

Indeed, this is strange.

That is strange indeed

وقَرارُوا في قلْبي

وقَرارُوا في قلْبي

وهْوَ لِي طَبيبْ

وهْوَ لِي طَبيبْ

And his dwelling is in my heart,

His home is in my heart

and he is my physician.

He is my healer

وإِن أردت يا صحْبي

وإِن أردت يا صحْبي

تَرْقى عن قرِيب

تَرْقى عن قرِيب

And if you wish, my companion,

And if you want, my friend

to ascend before long,

To rise up soon

أنْفِي ما رَأيتْ

أنْفِي ما رَأيتْ

أنْفِي ما رَأيت

أنْفِي ما رَأيت

negate what you have seen,

Deny what you have seen

مِن حوَادِثِ الأيَّامْ

مِن حوَادِثِ الأيَّامْ

تَبْقَى إِنْ فنَيْتْ

تَبْقَى إِنْ فنَيْتْ

of the happenings of the days;

Of the events of days

you abide if you vanish.

It will remain if it perishes

أنا عِنْدما نفْنى

أنا عِنْدما نفْنى

نبْقى في شُهُودْ

نبْقى في شُهُودْ

I, when I vanish,

When we perish

abide in witnessing;

We remain in witnessing

دايِماً نَرَى الْمَعْني

دايِماً نَرَى الْمَعْني

سارِي في الْوُجُودْ

سارِي في الْوُجُودْ

I always behold the meaning

Always seeing the meaning

pervading existence.

Flowing in existence

ندْعُو دَعْوَةِ المضْنى

ندْعُو دَعْوَةِ المضْنى

عِنْدَما نعُودْ

عِنْدَما نعُودْ

I utter the plea of the afflicted

We call out the summons of tribulation

when I return:

O my God, forgive me

for the wrongs I have committed.

For what I have reaped

أنْت يا فقيهْ سلَّمْ

أنْت يا فقيهْ سلَّمْ

وافْهم الرُّموزْ

وافْهم الرُّموزْ

You, O jurist, surrender,

You, O jurist, submit

and understand the symbols.

And understand the symbols

واقْتدى بمن يَعْلم

واقْتدى بمن يَعْلم

حَلَّ ذِي اللُّغْوزْ

حَلَّ ذِي اللُّغْوزْ

And follow one who knows

And follow those who know

the solution to these riddles.

Who can solve that which is perplexing

وادْنُ مِنِّي تَتْعلَّم

وادْنُ مِنِّي تَتْعلَّم

كُلَّ ما تعُوزْ

كُلَّ ما تعُوزْ

And draw near me—you will learn

And come near me to learn

all that you need.

All that you lack

تجْنى ما زَرَعْتْ

تجْنى ما زَرَعْتْ

تجْنِي ما زَرَعْت

تجْنِي ما زَرَعْت

You reap what you have sown.

لا تَقف معَ الأوهَامْ

لا تَقف معَ الأوهَامْ

واصِفُ إِنْ صَدَقْتْ

واصِفُ إِنْ صَدَقْتْ

Do not dwell on illusions,

Do not stand with delusions

and be pure if you are sincere.

However truthful you describe

يا نَدِيمي اسْقِيني

يا نَدِيمي اسْقِيني

وامْلاَلِي تمامْ

وامْلاَلِي تمامْ

O my drinking companion, give me a drink,

Oh my boon companion, quench me

and fill it for me completely—

And fill me completely

خمْرَةَ تُحْيينِي

خمْرَةَ تُحْيينِي

منْكَ بالسَّلامْ

منْكَ بالسَّلامْ

with wine that revives me,

With a wine that gives me life

from you, with peace.

From you in peace

وإِن سَكِرْتُ خلِّيني

وإِن سَكِرْتُ خلِّيني

نحْظَ بالْمَقَامْ

نحْظَ بالْمَقَامْ

And if I become drunk, let me

And if I get drunk, leave me

attain the station.

To share the station

تَرْقَى إِن صَحَوت

تَرْقى إِنْ صَحَوْت

تَرْقى إِنْ صَحَوْت

You ascend if you become sober,

You ascend if you wake up

you ascend if you become sober,

You ascend if you wake up

في مَقامِ مَن يثْبُت

في مَقامِ مَن يثْبُت

إِنْ أنا امْتَحَيْت

إِنْ أنا امْتَحَيْت

in the station of one who stands firm,

In the station of one who remains steadfast

if I am effaced.

If I become erased

يا عذُولِي كم تخْدَع

يا عذُولِي كم تخْدَع

يَكفي لاَ تَزِيد

يَكفي لاَ تَزِيد

O my reproacher, how often you deceive!

Oh my fickle one, how you deceive

Enough—do not add more.

Enough, do not increase

أنا قَطٌ ما أسْمَع

أنا قَطٌ ما أسْمَع

منْكَ مَا تُرِيد

منْكَ مَا تُرِيد

I never listen

I am a cat who does not hear

to what you wish to tell me.

From you what you want

فيَّا لاَ تَكُن تطْمع

فيَّا لاَ تَكُن تطْمع

وذَاكَ ما يُفيد

وذَاكَ ما يُفيد

Do not pin your hopes on me;

In me do not be ambitious

and that does no good.

That will not benefit

فَحِذْرِي أخَذْت
