I was given to drink كأسcup الهَوَىpassionate love قديماًlong ago
منfrom غيرother than أَرْضيِmy earth ولاَand not سمَائِيmy heaven
I was given love’s cup to drink long ago,
From neither my earth nor my heaven.
أصْبحتُI became بهthrough it فَريدَthe peerless one عَصريmy age
بَينَamong الْوَرىhumankind حاَمِلاًbearing لِوائِيmy banner
Through it I became the peerless one of my age,
Among humankind, bearing my banner.
لِيI have مَذْهَبٌa path مَذْهَبٌa path عَجِيبwondrous
فيin الحُبِّlove قَدْindeed فَاقَexcelled يَاO هَنائِيmy bliss
I have a path, a wondrous path;
In love it has excelled—oh, my bliss!
يَاO مَنْthose who هُمُوthey are لِلجْمِيلfor gracious deeds أهْلٌsuited
إِنْif لمnot يَمنُّواthey grant favors فَيَاthen O شَقائِيmy misery
O you who are people of gracious deeds,
If they grant no favor, then oh, my misery!
حاشَاكُمواfar be it from you يَاO أَُهَيْلَdear folk of نَجْدٍNajd
أنto تَقْطَعوُاyou cut off مِنْكْمُوfrom you رجاَئِيmy hope
Far be it from you, O dear folk of Najd,
To cut off my hope in you.
