تَنَبَّهْawake قدindeed بدىappeared شمسُsun العُقَارْthe wine
وَقدْand indeed غلبَoverpowered الشعاعُthe radiance علىover النهارْthe daylight
Awake: the sun of wine has appeared,
The sun of the vineyards has dawned
And its radiance has overpowered the daylight.
And its rays have overwhelmed the day
سُلافاًchoice wine قدْalready صَفتْbecame pure قِدْماًfrom of old وَرَاقَتْand became delightful
أدِرْهاpass it round بالصِّغارin small cups وبالكبارْand in large cups
Choice wine, pure from of old and delightful—
Pure wine has been described and delighted
Pass it round in small cups and large ones.
Pass it around to small and great
فَمَاfor not عُصِرَتْwas pressed وماand not جُعلتwas placed بدنٍّin a wine jar
وماand not سُبكتْwas cast زُجاجتُهاits glass vessel بنارْwith fire
For it was not pressed, nor placed in a wine jar,
It was neither pressed nor fermented
Nor was its glass vessel cast with fire.
Nor was its bottle fused by fire
شَربْناهاwe drank it بِدَيْرin a monastery ليسthere is not فيهin it
سِوَىexcept الحلاَجal-Hallaj فيin خَلْعِcasting off العذَارْthe bridle
We drank it in a monastery where there was none
We drank it in a monastery where
But al-Hallaj, casting off the bridle.
None dwelt but the stripped monks
قَدِيمٌancient عَهدُناour bond بالسُّكرwith drunkenness عِزًّاas an honor
وَماand not سُكْرdrunkenness الفَتىthe young man منهاfrom it بعارْa disgrace
Our bond with drunkenness is ancient, a source of honor,
Our friendship with wine is old and dear
And a young man's drunkenness from it is no disgrace.
And the youth's drunkenness with it no shame
نَشاarose فيamong القَوْمthe company شَماسٌa deacon لطيفٌgentle
يَجُرُّhe trails الذّيلَthe hem فيin ثَوْبِa robe الوقارْdignity
A gentle deacon arose among the company,
A gentle candlebearer arose among the people
Trailing his hem in a robe of dignity.
Dragging the train of his stately robe
فَأفْناُهمْso he effaced them بهthrough it عَنْهُمْfrom themselves فَتَاهُواso they wandered lost
فَمَاso not يُرْويهُمُوquenches their thirst شُرْبُdrinking البِحَارْthe seas
So through it he effaced them from themselves, and they wandered lost;
We distracted them from themselves and they became lost
So drinking the seas cannot quench their thirst.
Not even drinking oceans could quench their thirst
تَرَاهُمْyou see them شاخصينَstaring fixedly بِغيرِwithout لُبٍّreason
وقدand indeed سُلبُواthey were robbed بِغَيرwithout الإختْيارْchoice
You see them staring, bereft of reason,
You see them staring blankly, senseless
And they have been robbed, without their choosing.
Stripped without choice
وعندand upon دُخُولهمtheir entering فيinto الديرthe monastery ألَقوْاthey cast down
عَصَاهمtheir staff إذwhen ألمُّواthey alighted بالجوارْin the vicinity
And upon entering the monastery, they cast down
And upon entering the monastery they cast
Their staff, as they alighted nearby,
Their staffs as they felt the neighboorhood
كماjust as أَلْقىcast down الكليمGod's interlocutor بهاin it عصَاهhis staff
وَولَّىand turned away بالمخافَةِin fear للفرارْto flee
Just as God's interlocutor cast his staff there,
As the Kalim had cast down his staff
And turned away in fear to flee.
And fled in fear of escape
وَخَلواand they left رَأسَhead مالهمُوtheir wealth طرِيحاcast aside
هُنَاكthere وَأْقبلواand they came forward بالإفتِقارْin poverty
And they left their capital cast aside
And they left their capital fallen
There, and came forward in poverty.
There, and came destitute
إِضَاعَةsquandering مَالهمtheir wealth وجبتbecame obligatory عَليهمْupon them
كماjust as وَجَبbecame obligatory السُّؤَالbegging بالاضطْرَارْout of necessity
Squandering their wealth became incumbent upon them,
Squandering their money became binding upon them
Just as begging became obligatory out of necessity.
As questioning becomes binding in need
لِسانُtongue الششْترَيِّal-Shushtari بِهمof them وَلوعٌenamored

Al-Shushtari's tongue is enamored of them,
The tongue of Shatray is raging at them
And away from them, his state is bitter endurance.
And it is best to be patient with their state
