O you who took my heart from me,

love of you has driven me to distraction.

You have veiled me from myself

with myself, so I do not appear.

And I vanished from my own sight,

as though I had never appeared.

So I began to seek myself,

    hoping I might find myself.

    وِصالِي بي يُغْني

    And I said in my mind, "Leave me alone;

    my union with myself suffices."

    Whoever wishes to endure

    must die to illusions

    and truly take on

    the qualities of servants,

    for he is raised

to the heights of the eminent.

He lives as a king, always happy,

    enriched by his poverty.

    This one who is content

is a sultan in this world.

    يَشْمَت بِه الشيطان

    So let him not covet,

    lest Satan gloat over him;

    and when he is deceived,

    he comes away with loss.

So understand and learn from me, O my son,

    and after this, join me,

    if you believe me.

    Leave the reproacher and understand,

and listen attentively, so you may hear me.

    This knowledge is learned.

And beware: do not bring close

    anyone whose ignorance is known,

for he is known to wear one out.

So leave him and accompany me.

Where is the one who seeks

    and understands the meaning?

    نَجْمَ الحكم منَّا

    Then let him watch

    the star of wisdom from us;

for if it appears, he draws near

    and keeps seeking us.
