غَداdeparted مِنكَfrom you فيin الدُنياthis world الشَبابُyouth فَأَسرَعاand hastened away
غَدا مِنكَ في الدُنيا الشَبابُ فَأَسرَعا
وَكانَand was كَجارٍlike a neighbor بانَdeparted مِنكَfrom you فَوَدَّعاand bade farewell
وَكانَ كَجارٍ بانَ مِنكَ فَوَدَّعا
Youth has left you in this world and hurried away,
Youth departed from you in this world and hastened away.
like a neighbor who parted from you and bade farewell.
And it was like a neighbor who left you and bade farewell.
فَقُلتُso I said لَهُto it فاِذهَبthen go ذَميماًblameworthy فَلَيتَنيand if only I
فَقُلتُ لَهُ فاِذهَب ذَميماً فَلَيتَني
قَتَلتُكَI had fathomed you عِلماًin knowledge قَبلَbefore أَنthat تَتَصَدَّعاyou broke away
قَتَلتُكَ عِلماً قَبلَ أَن تَتَصَدَّعا
So I said to him, “Go, disgraced—if only I
So I said to it: “Go, blameworthy one! If only I
had knowingly slain you before you broke away!
had known you thoroughly before you broke away.
جَنَيتَyou brought عَلَيَّupon me الذَنبَsin ثُمَّthen خَذَلتَنيyou abandoned me
جَنَيتَ عَلَيَّ الذَنبَ ثُمَّ خَذَلتَني
عَليهِwith it فَبِئسَso how wretched الخَلَّتانِthe two traits هُماthey both مَعاtogether
عَليهِ فَبِئسَ الخَلَّتانِ هُما مَعا
You brought sin down upon me, then abandoned me
You brought sin upon me, then abandoned me
to it—what a wretched pair those two traits make!
with it—how wretched those two traits are together!
وَكُنتَand you were سَراباًa mirage ماحِصاًvanishing إِذwhen تَرَكتَنيyou left me
وَكُنتَ سَراباً ماحِصاً إِذ تَرَكتَني
رَهينَةَa hostage to ماwhat أَجنيI commit مِنَof الشَرِّevil أَجمَعاall of it
رَهينَةَ ما أَجني مِنَ الشَرِّ أَجمَعا
You were a mirage slipping away when you left me
And you were a vanishing mirage when you left me
a hostage to every evil I had earned.”
a hostage to all the evil I commit.”
