حَسَدواthey envied الفَتىthe youth إِذbecause لَمdid not يَنالواthey attain سَعيهُhis striving
فَالقَومُso the people أَعداءٌenemies لَهُto him وَخُصومُand adversaries
They envied the youth because they could not match his striving;
So the people are his enemies and adversaries.
كَضَرائِرِlike the co-wives of الحَسناءِthe beautiful woman قُلنَthey said لِوَجهِهاof her face
حَسداًout of envy وَبَغياًand malice إِنَّهُindeed it is لَدَميمُtruly ugly
Like a beauty's co-wives, who said of her face,
Out of envy and malice, “It is indeed ugly!”
وَالوَجهُand the face يُشرُقُshines فيin الظَلامِthe darkness كَأَنَّهُas though it were
بَدرٌa full moon مُنيرٌradiant وَالنِساءُand the women نُجومُstars
Yet her face shines in the darkness as though it were
A radiant full moon, while the women are stars.
وَتَرىand you see اللَبيبَthe discerning man مُحسَّداًmuch envied لَمdid not يَجتَرِمhe commits an offense
شَتمَinsulting الرِجالِmen وَعَرضُهُand his honor مَشتومُreviled
And you see the discerning man envied, though he has never
Insulted men, while his honor is reviled.
وَكَذاكَand likewise مَنwhoever عَظُمَتgrew great عَليهِupon him نِعمَةٌa blessing
حُسّادُهhis enviers سَيفٌa sword عَليهِagainst him صَرومُkeen-edged
Likewise, whoever receives a mighty blessing—
His enviers are a keen-edged sword against him.
فاِترُكso abandon مُحاوَرةَdebating السَفيهِthe fool فَإِنَّهاfor it is
نَدمٌregret وَغِبٌّand an aftermath بَعدَafter ذاكَthat وَخيمُgrievous
So abandon debate with the fool, for it brings
Regret, followed by a grievous aftermath.
وَإِذاand if جَريتَyou run مَعwith السَفيهِthe fool كَماas جَرىhe runs
فَكِلاكُماthen both of you فيin جَريهِhis running مَذمومُblameworthy
And if you run with the fool as he runs,
Then both of you are blamed for running his course.
وَإِذاand if عتِبتَyou reproach عَلىupon السَفيهthe fool وَلُمتَهُand you blame him
فيfor مِثلِthe like of ماwhat تأَتيyou do فَأَنتَthen you are ظَلومُdeeply unjust
And if you reproach the fool and blame him
For the very things you do, then you are deeply unjust.
لاdo not تَنهَforbid عَنfrom خُلُقٍa trait وَتَأتيَand you practice مِثلَهُits like
عارٌa disgrace عَلَيكَupon you إِذاif فَعَلتُI did (context: you did) عَظيمُgreat
Do not forbid a practice while doing the same;
A great disgrace upon you, if you do so.
ابدأbegin بِنَفسِكَwith yourself وَانَهاand restrain it عَنfrom غِيِّهاits waywardness
فَإِذاthen when انتَهَتit desists عَنهُfrom it فَأَنتَthen you are حَكيمُwise
Begin with your own soul, and restrain it from its waywardness;
Then, when it abandons that error, you are wise.
فَهُناكَthen يُقبَلis accepted ماwhat وَعَظتَyou counseled وَيُقتَدىand guidance is taken
بِالعِلمِby knowledge مِنكَfrom you وَيَنفَعُand benefits التَعليمُteaching
Then your admonition is accepted, and guidance is taken
From your knowledge, and teaching proves useful.
وَيلُwoe to الخَلِيِّthe carefree man مِنَfrom الشَجِيِّthe sorrowful man فَإِنَّهُfor he is
نَصِبُweary الفُؤادِthe heart بِشَجوِهِthrough his sorrow مَغمومُgrief-burdened
Woe to the carefree from the sorrowful, for the latter is
Weary at heart, burdened by his sorrow.
وَتَرىand you see الخَليَّthe carefree man قَريرَcontented عَينٍeye لاهياًamusing himself
وَعَلىand upon الشَجيِّthe sorrowful man كَآبَةٌgloom وَهُمومُand cares
And you see the carefree, glad-eyed and amusing himself,
While gloom and cares weigh upon the sorrowful.
وَتَقولُand you say مالَكwhat ails you? لاnot تَقولyou say مَقالَتيmy words
وَلِسانُand the tongue of ذاthis one طَلقunrestrained وَذاand that one مَكظومُstifled
And you say, “Why do you not say what I say?”
Yet this one's tongue is free, and that one's is stifled.
لاdo not تَكلَمَنever wound عِرضَthe honor of ابنِthe son of عَمِّكَyour paternal uncle ظالِماًunjustly
فَإِذاthen if فَعَلتَyou do فَعِرضُكَthen your honor المَكلومُthe wounded one
Do not unjustly wound your cousin's honor;
For if you do, it is your own honor that is wounded.
وَحَريمُهُand his sacred domain أَيضاًalso حَريمُكَyour sacred domain فاحمِهِso protect it
كيso that لاnot يُباعُis sold لَدَيكَin your presence مِنهُof his حَريمُanything sacred
And what he holds sacred is sacred to you too; protect it,
Lest anything sacred to him be sold in your presence.
وَإِذاand if اِقتَصَصتَyou exact retribution مِنfrom ابنِthe son of عَمِّكَyour paternal uncle كَلمَةًa wound
فَكُلومُهُthen his wounds لَكَto you إِنif عَقِلتَyou have sense كُلومُwounds
And if, in revenge, you inflict a wound on your cousin,
Then his wounds are wounds to you, if you have sense.
وَإِذاand if طَلَبتَyou appeal إِلىto كَريمٍa noble man حاجَةًa favor
فَلِقاؤُهُthen meeting him يَكفيكَsuffices you وَالتَسليمُand a greeting
And if you ask a noble man for a favor,
Then meeting him and offering a greeting are enough.
فَإِذاthen when رَآكَhe sees you مُسَلِّماًoffering a greeting ذَكَرَhe remembers الَّذيwhat
كَلَّمتَهُyou spoke to him فَكأَنَّهُthen as though he were مَلزومُobligated
Then, when he sees you greeting him, he remembers what
You spoke to him about, as though bound by an obligation.
وَرأىand he sees عَواقِبَthe consequences of حَمدِpraise for ذاكَthat وَذَمِّهُand blame for it
لِلمَرءِfor a man تَبقىremain وَالعِظامُand the bones رَميمُcrumbled
And he sees that the effects of praise and blame for that deed
Remain with a man even when his bones have crumbled.
فارجُso hope in الكَريمَthe noble man وَإِنeven if رَأَيتَyou see جَفاءَهُhis coldness
فالعَتبُfor reproach مِنهُfrom him والكِرامِand the noble كَريمُnoble
So place hope in the noble man, even if you see his coldness,
For reproach from him and from the noble is noble.
إِنif كُنتَyou are مُضطَرّاًin dire need وَإِلّاand otherwise فاِتَّخِذthen make
نَفَقاًa tunnel كَأَنَّكَas though you were خائِفٌafraid مَهزومُdefeated
If you are in dire need; otherwise, make yourself
A tunnel, as though you were frightened and defeated.
وَاِترُكهُand leave him واحذَرand beware أَنlest تَمُرَّyou pass بِبابِهِby his door
دَهراًfor an age وَعِرضُكَand your honor إِنif فَعَلتَyou do so سَليمُsafe
And leave him, and beware of passing his door
Ever; if you do so, your honor is safe.
فَالناسُfor the people قَدindeed صارواhave become بَهائِمَbeasts كُلُّهُمall of them
وَمِنَand among البَهائِمَthe beasts قائِدٌa leader وَزَعيمُand a chief
For the people have all become beasts,
And among the beasts are a leader and a chief.
عُميٌblind وَبُكمٌand mute لَيسَis not يُرجىhoped for نَفعُهُمtheir benefit
وَزَعيمُعُمand their chief فيin النائِباتِcalamities مُليمُblameworthy
Blind and mute—no benefit can be hoped from them;
And their chief is blameworthy in calamities.
وَإِذاand if طَلَبتَyou appeal إِلىto لَئيمٍa base man حاجَةًa favor
فَأَلِحَّthen insist فيwith رِفقٍgentleness وَأَنتَwhile you are مُديمُpersistent
And if you ask a base man for a favor,
Then insist gently, keeping at it.
وَاِسكُنand settle قِبالَةَopposite بَيتِهِhis house وَفِنائِهِand his courtyard
بِأَشَدِّwith the utmost ماthat لَزِمَclung to الغَريمَthe debtor غَريمُa creditor
And settle opposite his house and courtyard,
With the utmost tenacity of a creditor clinging to a debtor.
وَعَجِبتُand I marveled للدُنياat the world وَرَغبَةِand the desire of أَهلِهاits people
وَالرِزقُand sustenance فيماwithin بَينَهُمamong them مَقسومُapportioned
And I marveled at the world and its people's craving,
Though sustenance is apportioned among them.
وَالأَحمَقُand the fool المَرزوقُprovided for أَعجَبُthe most astonishing مَنwhom أَرىI see
مِنamong أَهلِهاits people وَالعاقِلُand the wise man المَحرومُdeprived
And the fool who is provided for is the most astonishing person I see
Among its people, and so is the wise man left deprived.
ثُمَّthen اِنقَضىceased عَجَبيmy wonder لِعلميَbecause of my knowledge أَنَّهُthat it is
رِزقٌprovision مُوافٍarriving وَقتُهُits time مَعلومُknown
Then my wonder ceased, for I knew that it was
Provision that will arrive, its time known.
