أَفاطِمَO Fatima مَهلاًgently بَعضَsome of هَذاthis التَعَبُّسِscowling
وَإِنand if كانَis مِنكَon your part الجِدُّearnest resolve بِالصَرمِin severing ties فايأسيthen give up hope
O Fatima, gently—less of this scowling.
And if you truly mean to sever our bond, then give up hope.
تَشَتَّمُshe scowls ليat me لَمّاwhen رَأَتنيshe saw me أُحِبُّهاI love her
كَذيlike one possessing نِعمَةٍa blessing لَمdid not يُبدِهاreveal it غَيرَother than أَبؤُسِhardships
She scowls at me, having seen that I love her,
Like one with a blessing who displays it only as misery.
وَإِنand if تَنقُضيyou break العَهدَthe covenant الَّذيwhich كانَwas بَينَناbetween us

And if you break the covenant that was between us,
And reveal what remains of your furtively snatched affection,

For I—do not let my outward composure deceive you—
Shall surely forget love by keeping a prudent distance.
وَأَعلَمُand I know أَنَّthat الأَرضَthe earth فيهاin it مَنادِحٌample spaces
لِمَنfor whoever كانَis لَمnot تُسدَدbe closed off عَليهِupon him بِمَحبِسِby a prison
And I know that the earth holds ample room
For anyone not hemmed in by a prison.

And I have been a man who does not shun sincere companionship,
Nor am I one to sleep without a resting place.
