فَقُلتُso I said لَهُto him مَهلاًwait فَأَنكَرَbut he denied ماwhat أَتىhe did
My neighbor struck me, wronging me with his shot.
I said to him, “Wait,” but he denied what he had done.
وَقالَand he said الَّذيthe one who يَرميكَstrikes you رَبُّكَyour Lord جازِياًin recompense
بِذَنبِكَfor your sin وَالإِذنابُand wrongdoing يُعقِبُbrings about ماwhat تَرىyou see
He said, “The one who strikes you is your Lord, repaying you
for your sin; wrongdoing brings about what you see.”
فَقُلتُso I said لَهُto him لَوif أَنَّthat رَبّيmy Lord بِرَميَةٍwith a shot
رَمانيhad struck me لَماwould not have أَخطاmissed إِلهيَmy God ماwhat رَمىHe aimed at
I said to him, “If my Lord had struck me with a shot,
my God would not have missed what He aimed at.”
جَزىmay He repay اللَهُGod شَرّاًwith evil كُلَّevery مَنone who نالَcommitted سَوءَةًa shameful deed
وَينَحَلُand he attributes falsely مِنهاfrom it الرَبَّthe Lord فيin عُذرِهِhis excuse الرِداthe harm
May God repay with evil everyone who commits a shameful deed
and, to excuse it, attributes the harm to the Lord.
