أَحبِبlove إِذاwhen أَحبَبتَyou love حُبّاًa love مُقارِباًmoderate
فَإِنَّكَfor indeed you لاnot تَدريyou know مَتىwhen أَنتَyou نازِعُturning away
Love, when you love, with measured love;
When you love, love in moderation,
For you do not know when you may cast it off.
for you do not know when you will turn away.
وَأَبغِضand hate إِذاwhen أَبغَضتَyou hate بُغضاًa hatred مُقارِباًmoderate
فَإِنَّكَfor indeed you لاnot تَدريyou know مَتىwhen أَنتَyou راجِعُreturning
And hate, when you hate, with measured hate;
And when you hate, hate in moderation,
For you do not know when you may return to it.
for you do not know when you will return.
وَكُنand be مَعدَناًa source لِلحِلمِof forbearance واصفَحand overlook عَنِfrom الأَذىthe harm
فَإِنَّكَfor indeed you راءٍone who sees ماwhat عَمِلتَyou have done وَسامِعُand one who hears
Be a wellspring of forbearance, and overlook injury;
And be a source of forbearance, and overlook harm,
For what you have done, you shall see—and hear of it.
for you will see what you have done, and hear it.
