وَماand whatever زَلَّslipped مِنّيfrom me إِنَّindeed مافاتَwhat has passed فائِتُgone
Leave off, Salma's clan, suspecting and harassing me,
and overlook whatever slipped from me; indeed, what is past is past.
وَلاand do not تُهلِكونيdestroy me بِالمَلامَةِwith reproach إِنَّماmerely
نَطَقتُI spoke قَليلاًa little ثُمَّthen إِنّيindeed I لَساكِتُsurely silent
And do not destroy me with reproach; I merely
spoke a little; then I shall surely keep silent.
سَأَسكُتُI shall keep silent حَتّىuntil تَحسِبونيyou think me كَأَنَّنيas though I
مِنَfrom الجُهدِthe strain فيin مَرضاتِكُمyour satisfaction مُتَماوِتُfeigning death
I shall keep silent until you think I am like one
feigning death from the strain of pleasing you.
أَلَمhas it not يَكفِكُمsufficed you أَنthat قَدalready مَنَعتُمyou defended عَرينَكُمyour lair
كَماjust as مَنَعَguarded الغيلَthe thicket الأُسودُthe lions النَواهِتُthe growling ones
Has it not sufficed you that you have already defended your lair,
as growling lions guard the thicket?
تَصيئُونَyou cut away لَحميmy flesh كُلَّevery يَومٍday كَماjust as عَلاstruck at

You cut away my flesh each day, just as one strikes at
a quarry of stone for cooking pots—a vigorous carver with an axe.
