إِنَّindeed امرءًa man نُبِّئتُهُI was told about him منamong صَديقِناour friends
يُسائِلُasks هَلwhether أَسقيI give to drink منsome of اللَبنthe milk الجاراthe neighbor
Indeed, a man I was told was one of our friends
Asks whether I give the neighbor some milk to drink.
وَإِنّيand indeed I لأَسقيI certainly give to drink الجارَthe neighbor فيin قَعرِthe depths of بَيتِهِhis house
وَبَيتيَand my house ماthat which لاno إِثمَsin فيهِin it وَلاand no عاراshame
And indeed I give the neighbor, deep within his house
And mine, something containing neither sin nor shame:
شَراباًa drink حَلالاًlawful يَتركُleaves المَرءَthe person صاحياًsober
وَلاand not يَتَولّىhe turns away يَقلِصُdraws back; contracts الخَمرَthe wine وَالقاراand the tar
A lawful drink that leaves a man sober,
Nor does he turn away, drawing back the wine and tar (wording unclear).
