لَقَدindeed جَدَّhas grown serious فيconcerning سَلمىSalma الشَكاةُthe reproach وَلَلَّذيand surely what
لَقَد جَدَّ في سَلمى الشَكاةُ وَلَلَّذي
يَقولونَthey say لَوif يَبدوappears لَكَto you الرُشدُgood sense أَرشَدُwiser
يَقولونَ لَو يَبدو لَكَ الرُشدُ أَرشَدُ
The reproach over Salma has grown serious, and surely what
They say—if good sense were plain to you—is wiser.
يَقولونَthey say لاdo not تمذَلbe careless بِعِرضِكَwith your honor واِصطَنِعand prepare for
يَقولونَ لا تمذَل بِعِرضِكَ واِصطَنِع
مَعادَكyour final return أَنَّthat اليَومَtoday يَتبَعُهُfollows it غَدُtomorrow
مَعادَك أَنَّ اليَومَ يَتبَعُهُ غَدُ
They say: do not be careless with your honor, and prepare
For your final return, for today is followed by tomorrow.
وَإِيّاكَand you must beware والقَومَand the folk الغِضابَangry فَإِنَّهُمfor they
وَإِيّاكَ والقَومَ الغِضابَ فَإِنَّهُم
بِكُلِّon every طَريقٍpath حَولَهُمaround them يُتَرَصَّدُwatch is kept
بِكُلِّ طَريقٍ حَولَهُم يُتَرَصَّدُ
And beware of the angry folk, for
On every path around them, watch is kept.
تُلامُyou are blamed وَتُلحىand you are rebuked كُلَّevery يَومٍday وَلاand not تُرىyou are seen
تُلامُ وَتُلحى كُلَّ يَومٍ وَلا تُرى
عَلىdespite اللَومِthe blame إِلّاexcept حَولَهاaround her تَتَرَدَّدُyou keep coming and going
عَلى اللَومِ إِلّا حَولَها تَتَرَدَّدُ
You are blamed and rebuked each day, yet are never seen,
Despite the blame, except coming and going around her.
أَقادَتكَهاit brought her to you العَينُthe eye اللَجوجُobstinate وَقَدand sometimes تُريit shows
أَقادَتكَها العَينُ اللَجوجُ وَقَد تُري
لَكَto you العَينُthe eye ماwhat لاnot تَستَطيعُcan لَكَfor you اليَدُthe hand
لَكَ العَينُ ما لا تَستَطيعُ لَكَ اليَدُ
The obstinate eye has brought her to you; and sometimes
The eye shows you what the hand cannot attain for you.
