تَجَنَّبنَني مِن بَعدِ شُحٍّ وَغَيرَةٍ

تَجَنَّبنَني مِن بَعدِ شُحٍّ وَغَيرَةٍ

عَلَيَّ فَما لي عِندَهُنَّ نَصيبُ

They shunned me after stinginess and jealousy

They have shunned me after possessiveness and jealousy

over me—so I have no share with them.

إِذا أَنا لَم أُمنَع فَأَضعَفُ طالِبٍ

إِذا أَنا لَم أُمنَع فَأَضعَفُ طالِبٍ

وَإِن لَم أُطَع عُدَّت لَهُنَّ ذُنوبُ

وَإِن لَم أُطَع عُدَّت لَهُنَّ ذُنوبُ

If I am not refused, then I am the feeblest of suitors;

If I am not refused, then I am the weakest of suitors;

and if I am not obeyed, sins are reckoned against them.

فَلا أَنا لِلعِرفانِ بِالهَجرِ أَنثَني

فَلا أَنا لِلعِرفانِ بِالهَجرِ أَنثَني

وَلا النَفسُ عَمّا لا تَنالُ تَطيبُ

وَلا النَفسُ عَمّا لا تَنالُ تَطيبُ

Yet abandonment will not turn me from grateful loyalty,

So awareness of their abandonment does not make me turn away,

nor can the soul gladly relinquish what it cannot attain.

nor is the soul content to forgo what it cannot attain.
