أَلَمhave you not تَرَseen أَنّيthat I أَجعَلُmake الوَأيَa promise ذِمَّةًa binding obligation
أَلَم تَرَ أَنّي أَجعَلُ الوَأيَ ذِمَّةً
أَخوa brother to الغَدرِtreachery عِنديin my view رَوغَةُevasion المَرءِof a man بِالوَعدِregarding a promise
أَخو الغَدرِ عِندي رَوغَةُ المَرءِ بِالوَعدِ
Have you not seen that I treat a promise as a binding obligation?
To me, a man's evasion of his promise is brother to treachery.
وَماand not رَجُلٌa man لاnot يَقتَفيfollows through بِكَلامِهِon his words
وَما رَجُلٌ لا يَقتَفي بِكَلامِهِ
بِموفٍa fulfiller بِميثاقٍof a covenant عَليهِbinding upon him وَلاnor عَهدِa pledge
بِموفٍ بِميثاقٍ عَليهِ وَلا عَهدِ
And a man who does not follow through on his words
fulfills neither a covenant binding upon him nor a pledge.
إِذاif المَرءُa man ذوhaving القُربىkinship وَذوand having الذَنبِwrongdoing أَجحَفَتhas dealt harshly
إِذا المَرءُ ذو القُربى وَذو الذَنبِ أَجحَفَت
بِهِwith him ضَرَّةٌadversity حَلَّتdissolved مُصيبَتُهُhis misfortune حِقديmy resentment
بِهِ ضَرَّةٌ حَلَّت مُصيبَتُهُ حِقدي
If a man, both kinsman and wrongdoer, is sorely afflicted
by adversity, his misfortune dissolves my resentment.
Sol 6.1
