لَناwe have صاحِبٌa companion لاnot كَليلُdull اللِسانِthe tongue
لَنا صاحِبٌ لا كَليلُ اللِسانِ
فَيَصمُتُso he keeps silent عَنّاabout us وَلاnor صارِمُsharp-tongued
فَيَصمُتُ عَنّا وَلا صارِمُ
We have a companion neither dull of tongue,
We have a companion whose tongue is neither dull—
that he should fall silent in our defense, nor cutting-sharp;
so that he might keep silent about us—nor sharp.

The worst of men toward his family
