لَخَرشَبتَyou certainly mangled ليto me يَومَthe day التَقَيناwe met جَوابَكاyour reply
By your life, Marsu‘ of Mujalid’s clan,
You certainly mangled your reply to me the day we met.
تُحَدِّثُنيyou tell me أَنّيthat I كَبيرٌold فَإِنَّنيand indeed I
كَبيرٌold وَلَكِنand yet أَيَّwhat شَيءٍthing أَشابَكاmade you gray-haired
You tell me that I am old, and indeed I am
Old—but what has turned your hair gray?
أَمِنis it from كِبَرٍold age فَالشَيبُfor gray hair عاقِبَةُthe eventual lot of الفَتىthe young man
فَتُخبِرُناso tell us أَمor كانَwas طِبّاًsorcery أَصابَكاstruck you
Is it old age? For gray hair is a young man’s eventual lot—
So tell us—or was it sorcery that struck you?

By my life, you have indeed married her to a kinsman,
Blameless and noble, hating what aroused your suspicions.
وَخُبِّرتُهُand I was told of him أَهدىhe gave as a gift جَزوراًa camel for slaughter سَمينَةًfat

And I was told he gifted a fat camel for slaughter;
He would have completed the gifts had he renewed your clothes.
