إِذاif كُنتَyou are ذاpossessing مالٍwealth كَثيرٍabundant فَجُدthen give generously بِهِwith it
فَإِنَّfor indeed كَريمَthe noble one القَومِof the people مَنthe one who هوَhe باذِلُa giver
If you have abundant wealth, be generous with it.
For the noble one among the people is the one who gives.
وَقَومُكَand your people لاdo not تَحمِلattack عَلَيهِمagainst them وَلاand do not تَكُنbe
بِهِمwith them هارِشاًquarrelsome تَغتابُهُمyou backbite them وَتُقابِلُand you confront
And do not attack your people, nor be
quarrelsome with them, backbiting them and confronting them.
فَماfor ... not يَنهَضُrises البازيthe hawk بِغَيرِwithout جَناحِهِits wing
وَماand ... not تَحمِلُcarry الساقَينِthe two legs إِلّاexcept الحَوامِلُthe supports
For the hawk does not rise without its wing,
and the two legs are borne only by their supports.
وَماand ... not سابِقٌone who outstrips others إِلّاexcept بِساقٍwith a leg سَليمَةٍsound
وَماand ... not باطِشٌone who strikes إِنif لَمdid not تُعِنهُaid him الأَنامِلُthe fingers
And no one can outstrip others without a sound leg,
and no one can strike if the fingers do not aid him.
إِذاif أنتَyou ناوأتَyou challenged القُرونَthe horns وَلَمand did not تَنُؤyou rise

بِقَرنَينِwith two horns غَرَّتكَdeceived you القُرونُthe horns الأَطاوِلُthe longer ones
If you challenge the horns and do not rise
with two horns, the longer horns will deceive you.

If your two horns stand level, they will not be overpowered
by an enemy, nor will any devourer consume your weak one.

Nor are these equal: the butting horn with which
you rise, and a horn that tilts whenever you rise.
