أَلاLo! تِلكَthat عِرسيmy wife أُمُّUmm (mother of) سَكنٍSakan تَنَكَّرَتbecame estranged
خَلائِقُهاher ways ليtoward me والخُطوبُand misfortunes تَقَلَّبُkeep changing
Lo, my wife there, Umm Sakan, has changed
her ways toward me—and misfortunes keep turning.
تَعَرَّضُshe makes hints أَحياناًsometimes وَأَزعُمُand I suppose أَنَّهاthat she
تُحَوِّطُshe carefully tends أَمراًa matter عِندَهُthrough it تَتَقرَّبُshe seeks favor
She makes hints at times, and I suppose that she
is carefully tending some matter through which she seeks favor.
فَقُلتُso I said لَهاto her لاdo not تَعجَليbe hasty كُلُّevery كُربَةٍdistress
سَتَمضيwill pass وَلَوeven if دامَتit lasts قَليلاًa little while فَتَذهَبُthen it goes
So I said to her, “Do not be hasty: every distress
will pass; even if it lasts a little, it will go.”
فَإِمّاso if تَرَينيyou see me لاnot أَريمُكِI leave you قاعِداًsitting
لَدىat البابِthe door لاnot أَغزوI raid وَلاnor أَتَغَيَّبُI go away
If, then, you see me sitting, not leaving you,
at the door, neither raiding nor going away,
فَإِنَّكِthen indeed you لاnot تَدرينَyou know أَنthat رُبَّmany a سَربَخٍvast waterless waste
دِقاقُfine pieces الحَصىof gravel مِنهُof it رِمالٌsands وَسَبسَبُand level wasteland
then you do not know how many a vast waste,
with fine pebbles, sands, and level open ground,
أَقَمتُI maintained الهَدىthe right course فيهِthrough it إِذاwhen المَرءُa man غَمَّهُoppressed him
سَقيطُfalling drops النَدىof dew وَالدّاخِنُand smoke-dark mist المُتَحَلِّبُdripping
I kept a true course through, when a man was oppressed
by falling dew and dripping, smoke-dark mist,
إِلىuntil أَنthat بَداappeared فَجرُdawn الصَباحِof morning وَنَجمُهُand its star
وَزالَand lifted سَوادُblackness اللَيلِof night عَمّاfrom what يُغَيِّبُit conceals
until morning's dawn and its star appeared,
and night's blackness lifted from what it concealed.
وَصَحراءَand a desert سِختيتٍhard and barren يَحارُloses its way بِهاin it القَطاsandgrouse
وَيرتَدُّand recoils فيهاin it الطَرفُthe gaze أَوor يَتَقَضَّبُis cut short
And a hard, barren desert, where sandgrouse lose their way
and the gaze recoils or is cut short,
قطعتُI crossed إِذاwhen كانَwas السَرابُthe mirage كَأَنَّهُas though it were
سَحابٌa cloud عَلىupon أَعجازِهِits hindquarters مُتَنَصِّبُstanding upright
I crossed when the mirage seemed
a cloud standing upright on its hindquarters,
عَلىon ذاتِa she-camel possessing لَوثٍstrength تَجعَلُmakes الوَضعَa swift trot مَشيَهاher walking pace
كَماjust as انقَضَّdarted down عَيرُthe wild ass الصَخرَةِof the rock المُتَرَقِّبُwatchful
riding a sturdy she-camel that makes a swift trot her walking pace,
like the watchful wild ass of the rock darting down.
تَراهاyou see her إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle استَحمَلَasked to be carried القَومُthe men بَعضَهُمsome of them
عَلَيهاupon her مَتاعٌbaggage لِلرَّديقِfor the rear rider وَمَركِبُand a riding-place
You see her, when the men ask their fellows for a mount,
with baggage for the rear rider upon her, and a place to ride.
وَتُصبِحُand reaches morning عَنafter غَبِّthe aftermath of السُرىnight travel وَكَأَنَّهاand as though she
إِذاwhen ضُرِبَis struck الأَقصىthe farthest one مِنَof الرَّكبِthe caravan تُضرَبُshe is struck
And after a night's travel, in the morning she seems as though
when the farthest in the caravan is struck, she herself were struck.
كَأَنَّas though لَهاshe has رَأماًa calf تَراهُshe sees it أَمامَهاbefore her
مَدىthe range of العَينِthe eye تُستَهوىshe is drawn إِلَيهِtoward it وَتَذهَبُand goes
As though she had a calf she saw before her,
as far as the eye reaches, toward which she is drawn and goes.
وَخَلٍّand a passage مَخُوفٍfeared بَينَbetween ضِرسٍa rocky crag وَغابَةٍand a thicket
أَلَفَّthickly tangled مَضيقٍnarrow لَيسَthere is no عَنهُaway from it مُجَنَّبُdetour
And a feared passage between a rocky crag and a thicket,
tangled and narrow, with no way around it,
كَأَنَّas though مَصاماتِthe lairs الأُسودِof lions بِبَطنِهِin its depths
مَراغٌwallowing ground وَآثارُand tracks الأَراجيلِof men on foot ملعَبُa playground
as though the lions' lairs in its depths
were wallowing grounds, and men's footprints a playground,
سَلَكتُI traversed إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle جَنَّshrouded ثَغَرthe mouth of طَريقِهِits path
أَغَمُّdense and dark دَجوجيٌّpitch-dark مِنَof اللَيلِnight غَيهَبُdeeply black
I traversed when the mouth of its path was shrouded
by dense, pitch-dark, impenetrable night,
بِذيwith one possessing هَبَراتٍthick muscles أَوor بِأَبيَضَwith a white blade مُرهَفٍkeen-edged
سَقاهُsteeped it in السِمامَpoisons الهِندِكيُّthe Indian المُخَرَّبُpierced-eared
with a muscular companion, or a white, keen-edged sword,
which the pierced-eared Indian had steeped in poison.
تَجاوَزتُهُI passed through it يَمشيwalking بِرُكنيَat my side مِخشَفٌa fearless night-roamer
كَسيدِlike a wolf الفِضاof the open waste سِرfirst fragment of 'his cloak' بالُهُremaining fragment of 'his cloak' مُتَجَوِّبُtorn through
I passed through it with a fearless night-roamer walking at my side,
like a wolf of the open waste, his cloak torn through.
كَريمٌnoble حَليمٌforbearing لاnot يُخافُis feared أَذاتُهُhis harm
وَلاnor جَهلُهُhis rashness فيماin whatever يَجِدُّhe is serious وَيَلعَبُand he plays
Noble and forbearing, whose harm is not feared,
nor his rashness, in earnest or in play.
إِذاwhen قُلتُI said قَدindeed أَغضَبتُهُI angered him عادَreturned وُدُّهُhis affection
كَماjust as عادَreturned وُدُّthe love الرَيَّةِal-Rayya المُتَثَوِّبُever-returning
Whenever I said, “I have angered him,” his affection returned,
as al-Rayya's ever-returning love returned.
وَكانَand he was إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle يَلتَقيmeets القَومَthe men قَرنُهُhis opponent
كَمَاjust as عَادَreturned وُدُّthe love الرَّيَّةِal-Rayya المُتَثَوِّبُever-returning
And when his opponent met the men, he would be—
as al-Rayya's ever-returning love returned.
