أَتانيَcame to me فيconcerning الطَيفاءِal-Tayfa أَوسُAws بنُson of عامِرٍAmir
لَيَخدَعَنيto deceive me عَنهاaway from her بِجِنِّwith the fury of ضِراسِهاher molars
Aws ibn Amir came to me about al-Tayfa.
He sought to trick me out of her with talk of the fury of her teeth.
فَسامَso he bid قَليلاًa little يائِساًdespondent غَيرَwithout ناجِزٍconcluding the deal
وَأَحضَرَand he brought نَفساًa spirit واثِقاًconfident بِمكاسِهاin bargaining for her
He made a small bid, despondent and unable to conclude the deal.
Yet he came with a spirit confident in bargaining for her.
فَأَقسَمتُso I swore لَوeven if أَعطيتَyou gave ماwhat سُمتَyou bid مِثلَهُits equal
وَأَنتَwhile you حَريصٌare eager ماnot غَدوتَwould you go away بِراسِهاleading her by the head
So I swore: even if you gave an amount equal to what you bid,
Eager as you are, you would not go away leading her by the head.
أَغَرَّكَdid it mislead you مِنهاabout her عَذمُهاher snapping عَنaway from حوارِهاher calf
تَقَذُّرَlike the aversion of أُمِّthe mother of السَكنِal-Sakan عِندَat نِفاسِهاher childbirth
Did her snapping at her calf mislead you about her,
Like the aversion of the mother of al-Sakan at childbirth?
فَوَلّىso he turned away وَلَمand did not يَطمَعhope وَفيwhile in النَفسِthe soul حاجَةٌwas a desire
يُرَدِّدُهاhe turns it over مَردودَةًturned back بِإِياسِهاby despair of her
He turned away without hope, though a desire remained in his heart,
Turning it over, only to have it turned back by despair of her.
