وَشاعِرِand many a poet سَوءٍwickedness يَهضِبُpours forth القَولَwords ظالِمٍunjust
كَماjust as اقتَمَّgathered indiscriminately أَعشىdim-sighted مُظلِمَthe darkness of اللَيلِthe night حاطِبُa wood-gatherer
And many a vile, unjust poet pours forth words,
Like a dim-sighted wood-gatherer gathering in the dark of night.
عَرَضتُI confronted لَهُhim بَعدَafter الأَناةِforbearance فَرُعتُهُand I terrified him
بِخَدباءَwith a mighty, gaping thrust قَدindeed تَرفَضُّfly apart عَنهاaway from it المَجاوِبُthe shields
I confronted him after forbearance, and terrified him,
With a mighty, gaping thrust that sends shields flying apart.
تَنَقَّيتُهاI selected it دُهريَّةًenduring through the ages ذاتَpossessing مَصدَقٍproven force
لَهاit has أَثَرٌa mark يَومَon the day of المَغَبَّةِthe consequences لاحِبُclearly visible
I chose it, enduring through the ages and of proven force,
Its mark is clear when the consequences come.
فَضَضتُI scattered بِهاwith it ماwhat كانَhe had جَمَّعَamassed قَبلهاbefore it
كَماjust as انفَضَّscattered عَنaway from شَمسِthe sun of النَهارِday الكَواكِبُthe stars
With it I scattered what he had amassed before it,
As the stars scatter away from the sun of day.
