أَلاlisten! ياO أَباAbu (father of) الجارودِal-Jarud هَلwhether أَنتَyou مُخبِريtelling me
بِأَيِّwith which زِنادٍfire-sticks عِندَكُمamong you يورَيَنwill be kindled قَدحيmy striking to kindle fire
Listen, Abu al-Jarud, will you tell me
Which of your fire-sticks will yield a spark when I strike?
سَكَتُّI kept silent فَلَمbut did not يَبلُغbring بيَwith me السَكتُsilence نَقرَةًa whit
وَقُلتُand I spoke فَلَمbut did not أبلغI attain بِذمٍّthrough blame وَلاnor مَدحِpraise
I kept silent, but silence did not advance me a whit;
And I spoke, but achieved nothing through blame or praise.
وَإِنَّكَand indeed you قَدcertainly عَلَّمتَنيyou taught me فَعَلِمتُهُso I learned it
فِراقَparting from الخَليلِthe close friend فيwith جَمالٍgrace وَفيand with صَفحِforgiveness
And you have indeed taught me—and I have learned it—
To part from a close friend with grace and forgiveness.
