Convey to Ḥuṣayn, when you come to him,
a reply and an admonition for you within it,
رَسولاًas a messenger إِذاif كُنتَyou are ذاpossessed of إِربَةٍgood judgment
بِماabout what يَعتَريكَbefalls you بَصيراًperceptive فَقيهاdiscerning
as a messenger, if you possess good judgment,
perceptive and discerning about what befalls you.
وَمِنand among خَيرِthe best ماwhat يَتعاطىundertake الرِجالُmen
نَصيحَةُcounsel ذيof one possessing الرأيِsound judgment لِلمُجتَبيهاfor one who chooses it
And among the best things men undertake
is a wise man's counsel for one who accepts it.
فَلاتَكُso do not be مِثلَlike الَّتيthe one that اِستَخرَجَتdrew out
مِنfrom أَظلافِهاher cloven hooves مُديَةًa knife أَوor بِفيهاwith her mouth
So do not be like the creature that drew out
a knife from her cloven hooves, or with her mouth.
فَقامَthen rose إِلَيهاtoward her بِهاwith it ذابِحٌa slaughterer
وَمَنand whoever تَدَعُspares يَوماًfor a day شَعوبُShaʿūb (Death) يَجيهاcomes to her
Then a slaughterer advanced upon her with it;
and whoever Shaʿūb—Death—spares for a day comes to her.
فَظَلَّتso it kept بِأَوصالِهاwith her limbs قِدرُهاher pot
تَحُشُّspurs on الوَليدَةَthe maidservant أَوor تَشتَويهاroasts her
So her pot, containing her limbs, kept
spurring the maidservant on—or roasting her.
فَإِنَّكَfor you indeed إِنif تَأبَyou refuse لاnot تَنتَهيyou desist
وَلَمand did not تَرَsee هَذاthis بنُصحٍto counsel شَبيهاًsimilar
For if you refuse and will not desist,
and do not regard this as akin to counsel,
I will make you swallow صاباًbitter ṣāb sap وَكانَand was المُراthe bitter plant murār (word continues)
رُcompletion of murār والصابُand ṣāb sap قِدماًof old شَراباًa drink كَريهاًloathsome
I will make you swallow bitter ṣāb sap; and the bitter plant murār
and ṣāb were of old a loathsome drink.
