أَبلِغconvey أَباAbu (father of) الجارودِal-Jarud عَنّيfrom me رِسالَةًa message
أَفيis it in كُلِّevery قَولٍutterance قُلتُهُI uttered it أَنتَyou آخِذُtaking exception
Carry a message from me to Abu al-Jarud:
Do you take exception to every word I have spoken?
تُوَقِّذُyou batter قَوليmy speech كَيso that تُوَلِّهَyou leave distraught حاجَتيmy need
وَبَعضُand some الكَلامِspeech لِلكَلامِagainst speech مَواقِذُcrushing blows
You batter my words to leave my need distraught,
And some words deal crushing blows to other words.
أَمِنكَis it from you قَوافٍverses قَدindeed أَتَتنيreached me كَأَنَّهاas though they
إِذاwhen صابَتِthey struck المَرءَa person القِرانُthe arrows النَوافِذُpiercing
Is it from you that verses have reached me, as though they were
Piercing arrows when they strike a man?
عَلىfor غَيرِno شيءٍreason غَيرَexcept أَنّيthat I مُعاتِبٌoffering reproach
وَذَلِكَand that أَمرٌa practice سَنَّهُinstituted it الناسُpeople نافِذُin force
For no reason, except that I offer a reproach,
And that is a practice people have established, still in force.
فَإِنso if كُنتَyou are حَقّاًtruly أَنتَyou لاno بُدَّalternative آخِذاًtaking to task
فَآخِذthen take to task بِعِلمٍwith knowledge قَدcan تَرىyou see مَنwho يؤاخَذُis called to account
So if you truly must take me to task,
Then do so knowingly: you can see who is being called to account—
بَريئاًinnocent نَصيحاًsincere مُسلِماًa Muslim ذاpossessing قَرابَةٍkinship
لَهُhe has ظُفُرٌa claw يوهيweakens العَدوَّthe enemy وَناجِذُand a molar
An innocent, sincere Muslim, a kinsman,
He has a claw that weakens the enemy, and a molar.
أُولَئِكَthose خَلّاتٌqualities سيَمنَعنَthey will protect جانِبيmy side
كَماas مَنَعَتheld back ماءَthe water الأَضاةِthe pool الأَخائِذُthe catch-basins
Those are qualities that will guard my side,
As catch-basins held the water of the pool.
وَخَلَّفتَنيand you left me behind بَعدَafter الأُليthose whom كُنتُI was قَبلَهُمahead of them
كَماas خَلَّفَتleft behind عَنهاbehind them القِسيَّthe bows الجَهابِذُthe experts
And you have left me behind those I once stood ahead of,
As experts left bows behind them.
فَدونَكَso take this إِنّيindeed I قَدindeed نَطَقتُuttered قَصيدَةًa poem
خَواتِمُclosing lines أُخراهاits final part قَريضٌverse مُلاوِذُseeking refuge
So take this: I have uttered a poem,
Its final lines are verse seeking refuge.
فَقُلso say ماwhat أَراكَhas shown you اللَهُGod إِنَّكَindeed you راشِدٌrightly guided
كِلاناboth of us مِنَfrom العَوراءِfoul speech بِاللَهِin God عائِذُseeking refuge
So say what God has shown you; you are rightly guided.
Both of us seek refuge in God from foul speech.
