أَقولُI say لِعاذِلَتيto my female reproacher مَرَّةًonce
وَكانَتand she was عَلىin وِدِّناour affection قائِمَهsteadfast
I once said to the woman who reproached me,
while she was steadfast in our affection:
إِذاif أَنتِyou لَمnot تُبصِريyou see ماwhat أَرىI see
فَبينيthen depart وَأَنتَand you لَناwith us صارِمَهsevering ties
If you do not see what I see,
then depart, severing your ties with us.
أَلَستِare you not تَرَينَyou see بَنيthe sons of هاشِمٍHashim
قَدَalready اَفنَتهُمُhas annihilated them الفِئَةُthe faction الظالِمَهunjust
Do you not see the sons of Hashim,
whom the unjust faction has already annihilated?
وَأَنتِand you تُزَنِّينَهُمyou credit them بِالهُدىwith guidance
وَبِالطَّفِّand at al-Taff هامُthe heads of بَنيthe sons of فاطِمَهFatimah
Yet you credit them with guidance,
while at al-Taff lie the heads of Fatimah's sons.
فَلَوfor if كُنتِyou were راسِخَةًfirmly grounded فيin الكِتابِthe Book
بِالَاحزابِin al-Ahzab خابِرَةًwell versed عالمَهknowledgeable
For had you been firmly grounded in the Book,
versed in al-Ahzab and knowledgeable,
عَلِمتِyou would have known بِأَنَّهُمُthat they are مَعشَرٌa people
لَهُمfor them سَبَقَتhad come before لَعنَةٌa curse حاتِمَهirrevocable
you would have known that they are a people
for whom an irrevocable curse had already been decreed.
سَأَجعَلُI shall make نَفسيmy soul لَهُمfor them جُنَّةًa shield
فَلاso do not تُكثِريheap up بيupon me مِنَof اللائمَهreproach
I shall make my soul a shield for them;
so do not heap reproach upon me.
أُرَجّيI hope for بِذَلِكَthrough that حَوضَthe pool of الرَسوthe Messenger (truncated)
وَالفَوزَand triumph وَالنِعمَةَand bliss الدائِمَهeverlasting
Through this I hope for the Messenger's Pool,
and triumph and everlasting bliss,
لَتَهلَكَso that it may perish إِنif هَلَكَتit perishes بَرَّةًrighteous
وَتَخلُصَand it may survive إِنif خَلَصَتit survives غانَمَهwith gain
so that, if it perishes, it may perish righteous,
and, if it survives, it may survive with gain.
