Who is there whose brotherhood and affection

Could gladden me after your affection or brotherhood?

When our ill-wishers speak to us tomorrow,

Their eyes glancing toward me and toward you—

Their suspicions already stirred, after such fine fellowship,

By estrangement on our part and a parting that speaks plainly—

Will you show them what they desire, and do

Both what is praised in that and what is deemed shameful,

Or hold fast to the bond of a sincere friend,

Pure in brotherhood—one like him is not cast aside?

Whichever you do, there will always remain

In my breast an affection for you that never departs.
