God has ordained that the Azd have their distinction,

and that they are the tent pegs of every land.

They sheltered Ziyad when he entrusted himself

to them—and Ziyad's judgment was sound.

So he came to be in al-Haddan, the Azd shielding him,

with sharp brown spears like the ropes of a deep well.

He has a pulpit he ascends every Friday,

and the apparatus of kingship: a police force and mustered men.
