أَبلِغconvey أَباAbu الجارودِal-Jarud عَنّيfrom me رِسالَةًa message
أَفيis it over كُلِّevery قَولٍutterance قُلتُهُI said it أَنتَyou آخِذُtaking to task
Convey a message from me to Abu al-Jarud:
Do you take me to task for every word I have spoken?
تُوَقِّذُyou batter قَوليmy words كَيso that تُوَلِّهَyou confound حاجَتيmy purpose
وَبَعضُand some الكَلامِspeech لِلكَلامِto speech مَواقِذُstunning blows
You batter my words to confound my purpose,
and some speech deals stunning blows to speech.
أَمِنكَis it from you قَوافٍrhymed verses قَدindeed أَتَتنيhave reached me كَأَنَّهاas though they were
إِذاwhen صابَتِthey strike المَرءَa man القِرانُarrows النَوافِذُpiercing
Is it from you that verses have reached me, like
piercing arrows when they strike a man?
عَلىover غَيرِno شيءٍthing غَيرَexcept أَنّيthat I مُعاتِبٌam reproaching
وَذَلِكَand that أَمرٌa practice سَنَّهُinstituted it الناسُpeople نافِذُin force
For no reason except that I reproach you—
and that is a practice people established, still in force.
فَإِنso if كُنتَyou are حَقّاًtruly أَنتَyou yourself لاno بُدَّescape آخِذاًtaking to task
فَآخِذthen censure بِعِلمٍwith knowledge قَدindeed تَرىyou see مَنwho يؤاخَذُis censured
So if you truly must take me to task,
then do so knowingly: you see who is being censured—
بَريئاًinnocent نَصيحاًsincere مُسلِماًa Muslim ذاpossessing قَرابَةٍkinship
لَهُhe has ظُفُرٌa claw يوهيweakens العَدوَّthe enemy وَناجِذُand a fang
an innocent, sincere Muslim, a kinsman,
who has a claw that weakens the foe, and a fang.
أُولَئِكَthose خَلّاتٌqualities سيَمنَعنَthey will protect جانِبيmy flank
كَماjust as مَنَعَتheld back ماءَthe water الأَضاةِof the pool الأَخائِذُcatchment basins
Those are qualities that will protect my flank,
as catchment basins hold a pool's water.
وَخَلَّفتَنيand you left me behind بَعدَafter الأُليthose whom كُنتُI was قَبلَهُمbefore them
كَماjust as خَلَّفَتcast aside عَنهاaway from themselves القِسيَّdebased coins الجَهابِذُassayers
And you have left me behind those I once preceded,
as assayers cast debased coins aside.
فَدونَكَso take this إِنّيindeed I قَدindeed نَطَقتُI uttered قَصيدَةًa poem
خَواتِمُclosing lines أُخراهاits final part قَريضٌverse مُلاوِذُseeking refuge
So take this: I have uttered a poem,
whose closing lines are verse seeking refuge.
فَقُلso say ماwhat أَراكَhas shown you اللَهُGod إِنَّكَindeed you are راشِدٌrightly guided
كِلاناboth of us مِنَfrom العَوراءِfoul speech بِاللَهِin God عائِذُseeking refuge
So say what God has shown you; you are rightly guided.
We both seek refuge in God from foul speech.
