أَتانيَcame to me فيconcerning الطَيفاءِal-Tayfa’ أَوسُAws بنُson of عامِرٍAmir
لَيَخدَعَنيto trick me عَنهاout of her بِجِنِّby the frenzy of ضِراسِهاher biting
Aws son of Amir came to me about al-Tayfa’,
Aws ibn 'Amir came to me in the twilight
to trick me out of her, citing her frenzied biting.
Wanting to trick me away from her with the wiles of his smooth talk
فَسامَso he bid قَليلاًa little يائِساًdespairing غَيرَnot ناجِزٍclosing the bargain
وَأَحضَرَand he summoned نَفساًa spirit واثِقاًconfident بِمكاسِهاin its haggling
He bid a paltry sum, despairing, without closing a bargain,
He bargained a little while, hopeless, unsuccessful
and mustered his spirit, confident in its haggling.
And brought a soul confident in its bargains
فَأَقسَمتُso I swore لَوeven if أَعطيتَyou gave ماwhat سُمتَyou bid مِثلَهُits like
وَأَنتَand you حَريصٌeager ماnot غَدوتَyou would depart بِراسِهاwith her head
I swore: even if you gave the like of what you bid,
I swore if you would give what you valued the like of
eager though you are, you would not lead her away by the head.
While you were so eager, you would not have gone to her head
أَغَرَّكَdid it mislead you مِنهاon her part عَذمُهاher biting عَنin defense of حوارِهاher camel calf
تَقَذُّرَlike the revulsion of أُمِّmother of السَكنِal-Sakan عِندَduring نِفاسِهاher confinement
Did her biting in defense of her calf mislead you—
Did her veils' fragrance delude you away from her company?
like Umm al-Sakan’s revulsion during her confinement?
The mother of dwellings is disgusted during her menses
فَوَلّىso he turned away وَلَمand did not يَطمَعhope وَفيand in النَفسِthe soul حاجَةٌa longing
يُرَدِّدُهاhe kept turning it over مَردودَةًrebuffed بِإِياسِهاby despair of fulfilling it
So he turned away without hope, with a longing in his soul,
So he turned away, no longer hopeful, though his soul still coveted,
which he kept turning over, rebuffed by despair of its fulfillment.
Echoing endlessly in despair
